Bring the benefits of natural Salt to your Bath

For thousands of years, salt baths have been regarded as a medicinal therapy. Hippocrates (460-370 BC) first discovered the therapeutic qualities of seawater and salt baths when he saw the effect it had on the injured hands of fisherman; improving pain and infections.

The healing powers of salt baths are still valued today and have countless well documented health benefits. For me, the three best salts to soak in are Epsom Salt, Dead Sea Salt and Himalayan Pink Salt.

Your skin is an excretive organ that mirrors the condition of your intestines. Unlike regular baths, which pull moisture from the skin, the upper layer of the skin absorbs and holds salt from the natural salt bath, binding water and bringing moisture into the skin. The skin's natural protective layer is maintained and keeps the skin from drying out. In addition, toxins and bacteria from the body are released into the bath water through osmosis, while the trace minerals from the salt are absorbed through the skin.

If you are a sensitive person, work with or are around a lot of people, there is a tendency to 'pick up' energy from others and hold it in your energy field. Adding natural salt to the bath has the additional advantage of cleansing the emotional body.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is rich in both magnesium and sulphate. While both magnesium and sulphate can be poorly absorbed through the stomach, studies show increased magnesium levels from soaking in a bath enriched with Epsom salt. Magnesium and sulphate are both easily absorbed through the skin.

Dead Sea Salt

Dead Sea Salt is super rich in minerals, including magnesium, calcium, sulphur, bromide, iodine, sodium, potassium and zinc, which are easily absorbed by the skin.

Himalayan Salt

Himalayan salt contains the same 84 trace minerals and elements that are found in the human body, a few of which include sodium chloride, sulphate, calcium, potassium, and magnesium.

Salt Mineral Benefits

  • Magnesium – Promotes cell metabolism, speeds up healing of skin tissue, soothes damaged skin, protects skin from microbes that cause allergies.

  • Calcium – Balances sebum, enhances skin hydration, promotes cell renewal, prevents wrinkles & fine lines, offers skin cancer protection.

  • Sulphur – Natural disinfectant, purifies skin, detoxifies the body, promotes hair growth, aids in the formation of brain tissue, joint proteins and the proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract.

  • Bromide – Soothes skin, relieves muscle cramps, calms nerves, repairs skin cells, revitalises dull complexion.

  • Potassium – Replenishes much-needed moisture, reduces puffy skin, reduces water retention.

  • Iodine - influences the functioning of thyroid glands by assisting in the production of hormones, improves energy levels by ensuring the efficient utilisation of calories, without allowing them to be deposited as excess fats, helps in the normal growth and maturity of reproductive organs, aids the formation of healthy and shiny skin, teeth and hair

  • Sodium – cleanses skin, relieves stiff & sore muscles, fights off skin cell degenerating free radicals, exfoliates dead cells, detoxifies skin.

  • Zinc – fights acne, protects skin from sunburns and harsh winds.

Getting the most from your Salt Bath

I use a cup of salt for a ¾ full bath, although more can be added if required.

When taking a saltwater bath, aim to get the temperature as close to body temperature as you can, so a warm bath, not hot!! Your body is approximately 37° Celsius or 97° Fahrenheit.

Spend at least 20 mins soaking in the bath to enjoy the benefits.

Salt baths can make you thirsty so its important to stay hydrated and take a glass of water in with you and drink plenty afterwards to continue to flush out any toxins.

People with heart problems or high blood pressure should consult a doctor before taking a salt bath.

Essential Oils

The benefits listed above can be enhanced further with the addition of therapeutic grade essential oils. So not only do you get the detoxing effect of the salt but the properties of the specially selected oils.
